The Toro Albalá Don PX 1999 is an exceptional single-vintage sweet fortified wine (technically a vino dulce natural), produced in the Montilla-Moriles region of Southern Spain. It is made exclusively from sun-dried Pedro Ximénez (PX) grapes and aged for over two decades.
Origin and Production
- Region and Winery: Produced by Bodegas Toro Albalá, a renowned winery located in Aguilar de la Frontera, within the Montilla-Moriles DO. They are famous for pioneering single-vintage PX wines and hold some of the oldest wine stocks in the region.
- Grape Variety and Process: 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes are harvested in mid-August and then left to sun-dry on straw mats for 7 to 9 days (asoleo). This concentrates the sugars intensely.
- Aging: The resulting must is gently pressed and left to settle for approximately 12 months before being fortified with wine spirit to about 17% ABV. The wine then undergoes extensive oxidative aging in old American oak barrels for over 20 years. As a vintage wine, the 1999 is from a single harvest year and not part of a Solera blend.
